Harmony Oschefski founder of the bodhi spa

Harmony Oschefski

Harmony Oschefski, founder of the bodhi spa was born in Rhode Island and raised in Nova Scotia. Being ever fascinated with the miracle of the human body, her schooling took her to Guelph, Ontario where she earned a BSc in Human Kinetics. After college she spent time in Venezulea working with children in orphanages. Following this, her career in complimentary health began working with BioAdvantex Pharma, a company dedicated to providing nutraceuticals for prostate cancer and HIV in Toronto, Ontario. After 5 years of a successful career in the complimentary health industry, Harmony took three years to travel, beginning in Hawaii, then a solo backpack adventure through Australia following which she landed back in Rhode Island to discover a life aboard sailboats. Her adventures took her to the Caribbean, Mexico, through the Panama Canal and up the pacific coast to northern boarder of Costa Rica. Her final trip along this journey was a transatlantic crossing from Rhode Islands to Spain.   During these years traveling abroad Harmony found peace and grounded herself with yoga – on the beach, in the mountains and on a boat.   As she discovered her inner yogi, Harmony made it part of her journey to find special sanctuaries and unique spas that offered a healthy experience and an escape into deep relaxation and mindfulness. Over the years it became clear that she had a genuine love for the traditional hydrotherapy spa, in particular the rejuvenating hot and cold water circuits found mostly abroad. Spending time solo, with a partner or group in mineral pools and hot steams and saunas, followed by a cold plunge became a favorite way to spend the day at the spa. Detoxifying in the traditional and organic methods used for centuries by the forefathers of medicine such as Hippocrates and Kneipp, felt powerful and very “real” for Harmony. From the mountains of Quebec Canada, the beaches of Spain, Maui’s North Shore, to the Islands off of Honduras, and even the urban center of Toronto, there was a real pattern developing in what types of spa experiences drew Harmony in. The euphoric feeling after a day of detoxification in a water, sauna and steam circuit was proving to be a favorite method of relaxation, and mind/body cleansing.

Harmony is now living in Newport Rhode Island to be closer to her family and her wild love of the ocean. Following an evening at the Zen hydrotherapy spa on the beautiful island of Maui, she decided it was time to build a business of her own. There had always been ideas for a business venture but the timing was never “just so” and the vision was never more clear.   She would build a small hydrotherapy spa in Newport RI. An all-encompassing place of healing, detoxification and ultimate relaxation was the dream she approached her sister Cedar Poirier-Hwang with, to join forces and help make a reality. In one tireless year of planning, organizing and studying the components of a hydrotherapy spa business, together they became the girls behind the bodhi spa!

Cedar Hwang

Cedar Hwang

Cedar Song Hwang grew up in Nova Scotia Canada but was always tied to Newport RI. Her family was originally from the seaside area so it always felt like a second home. When Cedar turned 16 she jumped at the opportunity to sail with her Uncle Bob Tiedemann aboard his classic yachts, in particular Gleam. She began summering full time in Newport, staying at her Grandmother Gertrude Tiedemann’s in Brenton’s Cove and continuing her life as a sailor.

Cedar spent many years traveling the sunny destinations of the world aboard sailing yachts before settling full time in Newport RI. She became the captain of the sailing vessel Heritage and continued to feed her thirst for ocean life. Cedar and her husband Dan began a local magazine called Newport Naked, which helped her to connect more with the local scene and gave her a better understanding of the town as a whole. Her sister Harmony Oschesfki approached her about opening a hydrotherapy spa and there was no doubt that this was just what Newport needed. She signed on as a partner as this was a perfect fit for her love of the ocean’s healing waters, and an opportunity to offer more to the community she loves.
